I grew up quail hunting the beautiful open Longleaf pine forests of East Texas in the 50's and 60's. I was introduced to the American Field and horseback field trials my Senior year in High School. It has been a driving passion for me ever since. Like most people, I started out in local puppy stakes and developed from there. I have many fond memories of the Brown's Trust field trial grounds that were available for many years between Singer and Longville, LA. and less than an hour from my home across the Sabine River in East Texas. During that time they were the home of 8 local field trial clubs and there were trials almost every weekend from October to April. The best part was getting to ride and watch such great dogs as Texas Fight, Rebel Wrangler, Buckboard, Accutron, Texas Allegheny Mike and many other local and major circuit dogs run the mile-square bean fields and piney woods of those good grounds.
Today, I have to travel much farther away from home to quail hunt and field trial but the passion for the classiest of running bird dogs still burns within. In the early days, I used the services of trainer Jim Tanner of Logansport, LA and then Ed Husser of Covington, LA. until his untimely death. After Ed, I met and began to use the services of David Grubb of Lake Orion, MI. David and I have followed the dogs now for over 15 years and he is my best friend. I fully believe him to be one of the best trainers in the country at taking a pup all the way through to a finished, polished performer with all the fire and desire bred into the dog still intact. A dog that is happy in his work and trusting of his handler. That will run the country and point his birds with style. I have never seen one of David's dogs ever cringe or go to the ground from fear of punishment.
My intentions are to continue to breed, train and campaign class all-age dogs for as long as I can crawl on a horse to see them go. It combines a love of the outdoors, horses and birdogs that satisfy's a sporting man's soul. I hope you will come along and enjoy this great sport of Field Trials, too!
